Coffee from Yemen is among the world’s rarest. As its people face a tragic conflict, coffee is one of the country’s few exportable commodities and sources of potential prosperity. Exporting is a formidable, sometimes life threatening challenge. Two of the many people who are a part of this coffee’s story are Faris Sheibani and Yahya Al-Lahaba. Faris is an entrepreneur who, in the shadow of the civil war, founded the company Qima to teach quality farming techniques. Yahya is a farmer who has applied these lessons, resulting in this exquisite coffee.

Yemen’s role in the story of coffee is long and turbulent. In the 1450’s coffee arrived in the nation on the northern shore of the Gulf of Aden. For 200 years the country became the world’s only source for coffee until the Dutch East India Company began planting it in Ceylon and Java in the 1800’s. Yemen’s heritage as the world’s first exposure to coffee is still alive in the term Mocha, which comes from the port that coffee was exported from. Now Mocha coffee has come to mean many different things in the world of coffee, but it traces its roots to the ancient seaside nation.
